For over twenty years I have worked from a virtual office. In 1995 they didn’t call it telecommuting nor was it socially ‘cool’. Now it’s not just normal but it has become the sought after option for those looking to reinvest at a minimum the commute time back into their life.
While I am a huge supporter of telecommuting, meeting someone in person is just better. Why? Well…it just is. We intrinsically know that there are benefits, it just seems hard to put into words.
Just last month we had a team meeting – in person. What was amazing was that after eight months Kimberley, our newest team member, met everyone in person for the first time. She had up until then numerous interactions with everyone yet meeting face-to-face had not happened. Was it a great evening? You bet! Why? Because there was this deeper connection that was made with everyone being present in person.
Meeting in person develops trust. The 70% non-verbal communication that is left behind from a text or an email – comes to the party. We just are able to get a better read on someone: good or bad.
Here is the latest research that was done by the Global Business Travel Association in Canada last month. Turns out, folks still find tremendous value to meet in person. Over 68 per cent believe technology can never replace meeting with people face-to-face in order to conduct business.
So, when are we meeting up face-to-face? I look forward to ‘seeing’ you.
